Mark Wheeller’s glam rock tribute play The Rise and Fall of Eed Sud and the Luminous Earwigs… from Thornbury affectionately recalls the glittering 70’s and one teenage boy’s ambition to be Starman and proved to be successful in gaining the writer Mark Wheeller’s students exceptionally high marks in two successive examinations series in the UK.
The music of David Bowie, T-Rex, Suzi Quatro, Roxy Music, Slade, Mott the Hoople, The Sweet, Alice Cooper and Mud provides the upbeat nostalgic soundtrack. Featured on its first outings on David Bowie’s own website news page, The Rise and Fall of Eed Sud and the Luminous Earwig from Thornbury is clearly embraced by all the Young Dudes and Dudettes!
The fun, flamboyant music and fashion of the 70s are the pulse of The Rise and Fall of Eed Sud and the Luminous Earwigs from Thornbury Based on Mark’s own youthful admiration of glam groups. This is a tale of a young boy’s efforts to be a rock star and to woo local girl Lorraine Izoff. It is part autobiographical, part fictional. Set in Thornbury, Bristol, where Mark was brought up it makes reference to Shapes Record Shop, where he spent almost all of his teenage school dinner money and initial earnings!

Shakey Threwer remembers everything from his teenagerhood in the 1970’s – his parents buying him his first Dansette record player, his first 45 (Banner Man) album, The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, and gig (Roxy Music).
The Rise and Fall of Eed Sud and the Luminous Earwigs from Thornbury is tried and tested as a school examination piece and fantastic theatre festival play. It has fantastic opportunities for both wardrobe (technical support candidates) and actors. In each of the two years it has been used the candidates playing the main parts have achieved maximum marks!
The longer (55 minute) version of the play, Sequinned Suits and Platform Boots, is still eligible for One Act Play Festivals. It is ideal material for any amdram theatre group with members who are fans of early seventies music. It is also a tried and tested school performance; a real audience pleaser! Parents and grandparents will relate to it really enjoy it! In the original production the appearance of the Blockbuster elicited shrieks of delight whenever he emerged!
The Rise and Fall of Eed Sud and the Luminous Earwigs from Thornbury is a feel good play with the atmosphere of a Musical!
