Compass Rose features 19 songs, all of which are described and transcribed in the Song Book, including instrumental soundscapes, featuring extensive SFX and underscoring.
Songs are in a wide variety of styles including rock (Moai Rock ‘n’ Roll) march (Following Orders) pop ballad (You’ll Fly) reggae/calypso (Follow That Bird) and sea-shanty (Ballad of the White Whale). All the songs adapt to varying numbers of cast members with two groups (the Birds and Sea-Creatures) able to be added to most scenes for extra support as needed.
The song sheets feature vocal melodies with lyrics, instrumental cues, bar numbers, dialogue cues and guitar chords. They are designed as a guide to the recorded backing tracks, not as full arrangements to perform from. They can however be useful if you add live instruments to your production. For example, song 9, Hura Hura has a simple four chord ukulele accompaniment. The ukulele is included in the backing track – but could easily be played by children on stage. Similarly, flute, guitar and percussion parts can add more depth and realism – and give musicians opportunities to perform live in the show.
Song Book Guides include:
- An introduction: what’s the song about?
- A song outline: a brief description the song’s organisation.
- Performance ideas: these range from detailed section-by-section notes through to performance suggestions.
- Plot points: the important story lines to focus on.
- Notes: ideas for staging, comments.

Copyright Information
The purchase of a single script infers no Copying or Performance rights. (Scripts and music can’t be copied for readings, auditions or rehearsals without purchasing the Copying Fee.) The fee gives you the right to copy the script and musical scores that you have purchased as many times as you need for these performances.
To stage a performance, you must announce your performance dates to Maverick Musicals and state whether you are or are not charging for tickets. This will dictate what kind of royalty fee you will be invoiced for.
Copying Fees (for rehearsal materials) and a Performance License must be obtained before your production can take place. Our streamlined system means that a Performance License Application is activated when you order the Basic or Deluxe Package. (Please note that it is a breach of Copyright to copy scripts and music, or to perform musicals or plays without the Publisher’s permission.)

Compass Rose & the Birdnesters is a thrilling new musical adventure set on Easter Island. From the writer of Cabbage Patch Dragon, Conundrum and Willow Blues comes this delightful large cast escapade of excitement for your junior to intermediate students to perform!
After being locked in her cabin for disobedience, feisty but self-centred Constance-Rose McAlister escapes from her father’s ship to Easter Island – to fulfil her dream of becoming a famous explorer. Despite being left behind when the ship leaves, she has great fun chasing the local wildlife, chatting with magic statues and of course, sinking pirate ships; all against the advice of the Poki, the Island Chief’s son.
But the fun of exploration turns sour when the pair are captured by the pirates and Constance is forced to help Captain Jack become a contestant in the Birdman Contest. This competition to become Chief of the Island could see the control of the island and her father’s life at stake! Constance must learn that wisdom is knowing which rules to follow, what advice is worth listening to – and just when you need to do what you’re told.
Additional educational resources: the script is enriched with a number of traditional Easter Island Rapa Nui words and phrases. The Rapa Nui efforts to ensure their language is ongoing (a goal similar to many Australian and New Zealand school’s teaching of their local indigenous languages) and further explored at Tim Tuck’s excellent blog.
