“They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere?” So goes the famous little poem of Sir Percy Blakeney, the English nobleman, who under the nom-de-guerre of The Pimpernel, a small flower which is his family crest, rescues, with his “League of the Pimpernel”, innocent aristocrats from the shadow of the guillotine during the worst excesses of the French Revolution.
We meet so many great characters, both French and English, imbibed with the spirit of their two nations at this momentous period of history, that naming them all would give away too much of the drama and comedy… So you need to read the script! Most of the characters come from the pages of the original novel. However, Madame Desfarge, with a spelling change and a comic twist, has visited from Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” and Madame Tussaud is based on a real-life character who was spared from the guillotine because of her talents as a sculptor in wax, in order to make wax models of famous victims of the revolution. She eventually set up the famous museum in London. Others? Well, they’re here for the fun! (especially the talking heads…)
