The purchase of a single script infers no Copying or Performance rights. (Scripts and music can’t be copied for readings, auditions or rehearsals without purchasing the Copying Fee.) The fee gives you the right to copy the script and musical scores that you have purchased as many times as you need for these performances.
To stage a performance, you must announce your performance dates to Maverick Musicals and state whether you are or are not charging for tickets. This will dictate what kind of royalty fee you will be invoiced for.
Copying Fees (for rehearsal materials) and a Performance License must be obtained before your production can take place. Our streamlined system means that a Performance License Application is activated when you order the Basic or Deluxe Package. They say the first casualty of war is the truth.
But the truth can be subjective, objective and obtuse. It can be elastic and illusive. It can be definite and evasive. It can be dangerous and divisive. But it is always patient. It is always just waiting to come out.
A war crime has been committed in a remote mountain village in Croatia. A mother and daughter, both scarred and traumatised, are confronted by a UN investigator trying to uncover the truth. The war has stopped, the ethnic cleansing has stopped – but the questions still remain. Is it for the best for everyone to put the horror behind them and to move on into a better future. Or must the truth come out?
If you are looking for anything light and fluffy – this is not the play for you. If you are looking for something that will engage an audience, move an audience, make an audience slightly uncomfortable, make an audience discuss the themes presented to them for days afterwards – then this is the play for you.
The ideal vessel for three good actresses.
“Deep” and “Shallow” were actually designed as a double-header and writer Simon Denver encourages you to try and present them on the same bill. You will not get two plays more diametrically opposed than these two. One is a deep drama and one is a shallow comedy. It is a great workout for three actresses’ to be in both plays.

Lisa Lorne Blair and Kev Blair –
That’s the title
And … it says it so well.
The themes are deep, the intensity is deep and the three incredible actors dive into this performance almost seemingly without taking a breath.
Kev Blair and I went to the matinee today at Maleny to support writer/director Simon Denver and his leading ladies in this fabulous one act play produced through Suncoast Repertory Theatre Inc
You may have already seen Deep. (A One Act Play) in one of its previous incarnations. It is a powerful one act play that has been entered into a few drama festivals throughout South East Queensland.
DEEP was originally performed last year at the Playhouse and at the Norfolk Island Drama Festival (where it won Best Play and is the holder of the rather illustrious-sounding Trans Tasman Trophy!!)
This time around there has been a cast change with Anna McMahon stepping in to replace Rachel Fentiman who was unable to continue with the process due to work commitments.
Having no expectations and thankfully no “spoiler alerts” we went into the intimate setting today not knowing what to expect but with an inner knowing that it was going to be powerful. With Simon at the helm and the talents of the amazing Joy Marshall, Ali Lamboli and Anna McMahon we were confident we would be in for a treat.
And indeed, we were.
This powerfully evocative script takes us on a journey as the back stories of each of the 3 women unfolds. In particular, the UN officer Katrina (played by Ali) gives a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the atrocities of war and the underbelly of humanity. Her portrayal of a somewhat jaded officer dealing with the frustrations of trying to do so much to achieve justice and making a positive impact and yet coming up against so many brick walls was incredibly on point (just ask Kev, as a former police officer, if you want first hand accounts!!)
Joy, as ever, is an actor you cannot take your eyes off. She dives into her characters with incredible gusto and peels back their layers with uncanny timing and skill. Her portrayal of the mother who just wants to focus on village life, her day to day tasks and not dredge up any discussion of war, flowed wonderfully and her reluctance and attempts to change the topic brilliantly set up the finale. Dare I say it, she is always a “joy” to watch!
And … having seen Anna in The Sunny Coast Showdown film festival a few months ago, where she appeared in the zombie comedy “Bin Day” (plus knowing her resume is jam-packed with standout performance credits) we knew we would be seeing another great talent on stage. And this was certainly the case. Her character Vespa’s bitterness, contempt and anguish was unwavering from the moment she stepped into the scene and lit the match for a fire-burst of conflict with Katrina.
Congrats to you Simon for such a powerful script and the messages it brought home, shared so insightfully through the 3 characters you breathed life into. We also loved the simple set and intimacy of the staging, which reflected the setting so well, allowing the focus to be on the actors and the gradual “reveal” of their experiences.
Kev and I are sometimes asked why we we have been so passionate about live theatre for the past 2 decades. One of the main reasons is because of its ability to entertain, enlighten or educate an audience. Great directors know this and use their direction, creativity and vision to take the audience on this journey.
Deep moves you deeply into a scenario that is truly ENLIGHTENING and indeed shines the focus on some harsh truths. It is one of the best short dramatic plays we have seen on the Coast and had us talking all the way home.
BRAVO!!
Thank you to everyone involved and BREAK A LEG on the festival circuit!!
