Mike CarterMike Carter started writing for the theatre in 1981 when he was teaching in a preparatory school in Seaford. His first musical, ‘Tom and Huckleberry was performed by the cast and staff of the school but its overwhelming success immediately led to other things. Within a couple of years he had been asked to write a new musical production for The Gardner Arts Centre and his plays were being performed by amateur and professional companies around the country. Mike has continued to write, direct and produce plays ever since and, with over 25 musicals to his credit, is now firmly established as one of the UK’s most respected theatre writers for children. His shows have been staged in Europe, Australia, America, Alaska and Canada. He has been privileged to work with Raymond Briggs on a musical adaptation of his classic picture book ‘Fungus the Bogeyman’ which played at The Leicester Haymarket and The Belgrade in Coventry under the direction of Ken Campbell. And his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ is the only musical version of the book to date which has ever been allowed on the stage or radio by The Dahl Estate, and indeed by Roald Dahl himself who attended the very first production of the show in 1987. This adaptation was also used as part of the BBC’s highly acclaimed ‘Listen!’ series with Gary Wilmott and Maria Friedman. Mike’s adaptation of ‘The Jungle Book’ (available through Maverick Musicals) was featured in The Guardian’s Top 5 Christmas Shows in 2002/2003. Mike has recently turned his hand to writing filmscripts and his latest script, ‘A Leap of Faith’ is currently in development with BBC director, Ben Fuller. Mike also runs workshops in the corporate world illustrating the incredible power of Body Language.
