This play from left field is about the importance of doing nothing and having time out. We all do it. We all need to do it, but who is going to change the world and what is life all about? Why should we care? Why is it so noisy? And will the lawn ever get mowed?

The people in this play know each other extremely well. The three friends, very relaxed in each other’s company, soon find what inhibitions they may have had washed away by a healthy sluicing of booze!

The action, such as it is, takes place in a garage on a languid day in summer. The meaning of life and death is broken down, built back up again, broken down again after lunch and then, due to a lack of time, left in a heap in the corner by the lawnmower.

Winning play of the Noosa One Act Playwriting Competition in 2011

Winner of The Dolphin Theatre (Auckland New Zealand) Best One Act Play of 2012

One of the hardest thing in life is feeling like you don’t fit. You strive to… Fit in with your friends. Fit in with your family. Fit the beauty mold. Fit the image of perfection.

Sisters Shae and Blaire are moving cross-country with their mother following the tragic loss of her brother and their parent’s subsequent divorce.  The idea of a fresh start means nothing when all you want is for things to be the way they were.  Shae’s life is spiraling out of control and she feels like a stranger in her own home.  So she makes a choice – a choice to take back control.

The Pissoirs of Provincial...

MavMusEditor Leave a Comment

This play is set in the heartland of provincial France, a part of the world that is justly famed for its tourist landmarks from the chateaus of the Loire Valley to the languorous beauty of the Provencal countryside. Here, tourists can be assured of a warm welcome from French locals who like nothing more than convivial interaction with English-speaking people clad in sleeveless puffer jackets and wash and wear cargo pants.

Well, that what they tell you in the various tour guides and brochures anyway.

Beyond the Facebook and Instagram posts there is another side of international travel that goes largely unacknowledged and even supressed – the side where pretty much everything goes wrong. The first rule of international holidaying is that you never ever come home talking about disappointments or disasters. This play fearlessly defies the code and goes where tourists fear to tread. It is the unflinching account of what really occurred on one of those alleged trips of a lifetime, warts and all.

Shortlisted for the 2022 Noosa One-Act Playwriting Competition.

Piskeys Down Under

MavMusEditor Leave a Comment

Elves, gnomes, leprechauns; where would theatre restaurant be without the wee folk eh? Of course there’s wee folk and there’s wee folk. And the Cornish Piskey (a belligerent sprite at the best), is one height-challenged creature it’s wise to avoid crossing. But what brings the Piskeys down under? Nothing less than the extinction of the entire Piskey race, that’s what. Jacko and Johnno, the last remaining Piskeys have travelled to the Antipodes in search of an intelligent, sober and chaste human woman to be their queen. But when their attempts at wooing go astray they enlist the help of Ernest P Smuggins, a Rotunda salesman in need of money to win the favour of his boss, the delectable Jacqueline Gazunder. With the local Cornish Fair quickly approaching, the town Brass Band is practising for the Battle of the Brass competition, the local bakery is cooking the world’s largest pastie and the local girls are vying to be crowned Queen of the Fair and all is in place for Theatre restaurant’s stupidest plot, explained and elucidated by the play’s resident plot analyst, Evelyn Charmers.
So do the Piskeys get their queen? Does Smuggins get his boss? Does the Brass Band play even a single note correctly? Does the giant pastie explode? Does the audience survive the onslaught of rapid one-liners, sight gags and onstage antics? All this and more is answered in ‘Piskeys Down Under’!

Confetti

MavMusEditor Leave a Comment

Your wedding day; many say it is the most loving, most memorable, most…umm…’most happiest’ day of one’s life.

Yup…that’s what the ‘many’ say.  But that’s not likely to be what Mia says on her wedding day.  Not after she agrees to let her Male of Honor organize the wedding…which he leaves to the day of the wedding.  Everyone knows things don’t exactly go to plan when left to the last minute. Scrap that – everyone knows nothing will go to plan!  At least there’s the honeymoon to look forward to…if one can snag a deal of the day on Scoopon.

On top of that there are feuding bridesmaids batting it out for the top position, a missing dress, a StepMonster stealing everyone’s thunder and a rash that threatens to destroy the one photo that will be taken to capture the day.  This is likely to be one wedding people will be talking about for quite some time!

The Deluxe Package includes the recording of Flashlight Theatre Company’s 2019 production of Confetti.

Old performers, they say, never retire.  The phone just stops ringing…

Geoffrey is the newest recruit to the Lion Tamers, Magician’s Assistants and Human Cannonball Lighters Retirement Village – the LTMAHCLRV, for short.  As one half of “Geoffrey and Eustace, Lion Tamers Extraordinaire”, he has earned his rest.  No sign of Eustace anywhere though…

He joins Hortensia and Estella; both assistants to magicians, both with a tale to tell – try stopping ‘em – and with an abiding hatred of each other.  And Lionel.  No one quite knows what to make of Lionel.  And his little friend.  Thrown together with nothing more than a lifetime of showbiz to bind them, they soon find that they have more in common than, perhaps, they imagined.  And Lionel.  What’s his role here?  He’s cleaned up after elephants, tried, in vain, to keep clowns off the sauce but this may be his moment to shine – finally.

Circus is a dark comedy:  full of showbiz nuggets and a gift for mature actors and lepidopterologists everywhere.

Winner (Best Play) of the Toowoomba Play Writing Competition.

A sparkling homegrown comedy which recalls the best of British farce, this audience-pleasing laugh-fest, winner of the People’s Choice Award at the respected Noosa One Act Competition, features a number of memorable characters.

Patty and Tom are newly married. However, that shock is nothing compared to the revelations in store for this newly married couple! There’s Bernadette, Tom’s rather snobby mother, and George, Patty’s distraught, tradesman father, plus the colourful, animal-loving neighbour Dorothy Attenborough – a role, which, no doubt, the late Margaret Rutherford would have truly made her own.

Here’s a play to showcase some of the older members of your theatre company (Dorothy, Bernadette, and George carry much of the humour), whilst still providing important opportunities for two younger players. Three Chairs! is a very funny and skillfully written show especially suited to those with a love of precise timing.

With its minimal requirements in terms of props, setting and lights, Three Chairs is an ideal vehicle for touring, whilst its running time and cast size make it a most attractive Festival play. Three Chairs – lots of laughs, easy to stage, with plenty of acting challenges. What more could you want in a one act play?
